Philly Cheesesteak for a Crowd
A good, classic Philly Cheesesteak has good fried onions, thin cut steak, good roll and cheese whiz. We are making just as good of a cheesesteak, but in smaller portions and for a crowd.
My favorite part of football season is tailgating and food. I grew up around so much football, no matter how hard I try to not care about football season, it’s basically just in me. It’s all my family will talk about for the next six months let’s be real. BUT I will sit in on a game if it means wings, pizza and cheesesteaks.

Philly Cheesesteak Sliders with Ground Beef
You can follow this recipe almost exactly if using ground beef. The ground beef will take a few minutes longer to cook than really thinly sliced steak.
How to shave Steak for Philly Cheesesteaks
Let any steak that you buy freeze 20 minutes or more in order to get as thin slices as possible with a knife. A sharper knife will also make it even easier. You can also buy shaved steak or ask for shaved steak from the butcher! They will shave any cut of meat you ask for.
How to make healthy Philly Cheesesteak Sliders?
I believe whole foods, no crazy ingredients = healthy. I like to splurge on a grassfed beed and good cheese when making these because the ingredients are simple. This is a recipe full of real, whole food! Switch out the Hawaiian rolls for your favorite slider bun. You can also make my Philly Cheesesteak Bowls with homemade cheese whiz for even more options (like adding veggies or serving with rice or over lettuce)
Added Notes, Tips & Tricks
Layer the cheese first. This order is imperative to keeping the buns toasty & not soggy. We want all flavor & juices contained. Add your steak. Cover with onions. Add tops of rolls & brush with garlic butter.
I love how Hawaiian Rolls bake. They get so toasty & crunchy on top and buttery & stay so sweet and soft in the middle. Brush the tops evenly with the garlic butter and parsley. It adds a bit of extra flavor & helps the tops stay toasty.

Game Day Cheesesteak Sliders w. Fried Onions
Ingredients
- 1 12-pack Hawaiian Rolls
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 lb ribeye Steak* sliced as thin as possible
- 1 large yellow onion chopped
- 3-6 slices provolone cheese depending on thickness of slice
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp butter melted
- 1 tbs fresh chopped parsley
- salt
- hot peppers, green peppers, mushrooms optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. I recommend placing steak in the freezer for 10-20 mins (while oven preheats & you chop onion). This makes it easier to slice the steak thin. Slice Hawaiian Rolls in half as one, removing tops from bottoms. Set tops aside. Place bottoms of rolls on baking sheet lined with parchment.
- Cook Steak*: Heat 1tbs olive oil in skillet on high. When oil is hot & shimmering, throw in sliced steak with a pinch of salt. Cook for 1-2 minutes so some of the steak gets browned before tossing. Cook steak 2-3 minutes longer until it is mostly cooked through (I like to leave some pink). Remove steak with tongs or slotted spoon leaving fat & juices. Leave pan on medium high heat & add onions.
- Cook Fried Onions: Add big pinch salt & toss it steak fat & juices. Add another drizzle of oil if they seem dry or sticking to pan. Turn heat down to medium-low. Cook onions until soft & browning, about 10 minutes. Make butter. In a small dish add melted butter, garlic powder & parsley. I like to melt the butter in the onion pan when finished with onions.
- Bake Sliders: Layer the cheese slices over the bottoms of the rolls. Then the steak. Then onions. Place the tops of the rolls on everything to make a sandwich. Brush tops of rolls with garlic butter. Loosely tent with foil & bake for 10 minutes. Remove & bake for another 10-15 minutes until tops are toasty, golden brown and lightly crisp on top. Pull apart or cut to serve.
